For James Fuller, professional cricketer and Hampshire County player, recovery isn’t just part of the game, it’s a key element of performance. With a career spanning 15 years across Gloucestershire, Middlesex and Hampshire, James knows how demanding the county season can be, with long four-day matches quickly followed by T20 fixtures.
“Recovery’s huge,” James explains. “You need to get back to baseline quickly so you can perform at your best. It’s not just during the season; off-season training is all about building and recovering smartly.”
A major injury
James recently faced a significant setback while playing a T10 competition in the United States.
“I ruptured my lateral hamstring while running for a two,” he recalls. “It felt like I’d been shot in the back of my leg. I hoped it wasn’t serious, but the MRI confirmed I needed surgery.”
The initial days post-surgery were tough.
“The first week was awful. Mostly lying on the couch, trying to manage the pain, keeping hydrated and eating well. My first rehab session was just under two weeks later, and it was intense.”
Turning to HBOT
James had previously experienced hyperbaric oxygen therapy (HBOT) at HybO2 House and had seen the benefits first-hand.
“I first became aware of HBOT at Surrey’s Oval, where their changing rooms feature cutting-edge recovery tech. I researched it, and it made sense, it helps with recovery between games and after injuries. When I found HybO2 House five minutes from my home in Winchester, I knew I had to get involved.”
After his recent surgery, HBOT became a crucial part of his recovery plan.
“As an athlete, you want to actively do something to aid recovery. HBOT supercharges that process. I’m building momentum early, which means I’m weeks ahead of the typical recovery curve. That’s huge for someone coming back from a major injury.”
Early results
Even after just a few sessions, the difference was noticeable.
“After four sessions, the pain had almost gone, and I was moving more easily. The physio was surprised at the strength I already had in my hamstring. HBOT is clearly helping to accelerate recovery.”
The benefits go beyond the physical
“Mentally it feels amazing. It scratches that athlete itch, you’re actively moving forward rather than sitting idle. I’ve also noticed better sleep and more consistent energy, which is crucial when balancing rehab, training and family life.”
A strategic advantage
James views HBOT as more than a recovery tool, it’s a strategic edge.
“Teams around the world are investing in recovery and HBOT is growing in popularity. I use it strategically: during the most demanding periods of the season or after major injuries. Admittedly it’s not something I use constantly, but when I do, I feel the difference.”
He strongly recommends HBOT to other athletes.
“Absolutely. Anyone in sport can benefit from this technology.”
Why HBOT at HybO2 House works
James highlights the professional environment and expertise of the team.
“The space is open, professional and the equipment is top end. The staff know what they’re doing and genuinely want to help. It’s a bespoke, supportive approach which makes all the difference.”
When asked to sum up HBOT in three words, James hits a six with his response:
Powerful. Scientific. Recovery.
