The key to a clearer mind

PTSD, anxiety & depression

Some studies suggest that HBOT could be an effective treatment for those suffering from post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), and where used, it is usually done so where other conventional treatments – such as psychotherapy and medication – haven’t worked.

Common symptoms of anxiety and depression have also improved in some prolonged users of hyperbaric therapy, but where treatment might work for one person, it doesn’t mean it will work for others suffering from similar mental health issues.

A study comparing the difference between psychotherapy and hyperbaric oxygen therapy as a form of treatment on people with psychological problems found them to be rather similar:

"...[HBOT can] improve functional impairment, relieve depression, anxiety and other negative emotions, strengthen patients’ resolve to overcome disease, and let patients more actively participate in rehabilitation training, forming a virtuous circle."

Menopause

HBOT is also considered a complementary treatment to help alleviate some of the symptoms of menopause, with some being extremely life-altering.

HBOT as a tool to provide menopausal relief has been studied to show improvement in the quality of sleep and menopausal clinical symptoms such as insomnia and night sweats. Heart palpitations might also be eased through consistent therapy.

Insomnia

Clinical studies in recent years have shown that based on conventional treatment, combined with hyperbaric oxygen therapy as an auxiliary means, the sleep quality of patients can be significantly improved and sleep time increased.

HBOT reduces inflammatory biochemicals and increases levels of key antioxidant enzymes to decrease stress, aiding relaxation and relieving agitation to achieve better sleep. PSQI, ESS and SBQ – common clinical scales used to assess sleep quality in individuals – have undertaken studies that have shown adding HBOT to conventional treatment can reduce the dependency on sleep medication.

Erectile dysfunction

Erectile dysfunction can have numerous causes, and whether you can be treated for it using hyperbaric oxygen therapy depends on why you are suffering with it.

Men suffering with erectile dysfunction due to damaged blood vessels, for example, can use HBOT as a complementary treatment due to its ability to help with angiogenesis – the formation of new blood vessels. The growth of new blood vessels in the penis helps carry more blood to it, thus helping individuals suffering with erectile dysfunction to achieve and sustain better erections.

Before using HBOT to treat erectile dysfunction, it is vital to ascertain the actual cause of it by visiting your GP. If it is not due to the reason of damaged blood vessels in the organ as stated above, there’s a strong chance HBOT will prove ineffective.
