Why you still feel exhausted after Christmas. (It’s not lack of willpower!)

If you’re still feeling foggy, flat and exhausted weeks after Christmas, you’re not alone… and you’re not failing!

At HybO2, January is where we hear this most. And the truth is, this kind of fatigue isn’t about motivation… it’s about inflammation.

Our in-house naturopath, Caroline Longmore, explains:

“During the festive period most people consume more sugar and alcohol, sleep less and experience more emotional and physical stress. All of this raises inflammation in the body, which directly affects how well oxygen is delivered to our cells.”

This matters because oxygen is a key factor in enabling your cells to make energy. When inflammation is high, blood vessels don’t relax as easily, and red blood cells don’t release oxygen efficiently. Even though you’re breathing normally, your tissues can become subtly oxygen-deprived.

Caroline explains:

If you’re still feeling foggy, flat and exhausted weeks after Christmas, you’re not alone… and you’re not failing!

At HybO2, January is where we hear this most. And the truth is, this kind of fatigue isn’t about motivation… it’s about inflammation.

“When oxygen delivery drops, the mitochondria (the energy producing part of the cells), slow down. When mitochondria slow down, ATP production (the body’s energy currency) falls, and that’s when fatigue, brain fog and low motivation appear.”

This is why January tiredness feels so deep. It’s not weakness, it’s cellular.

How naturopathic support helps restore energy

Caroline recommends starting with stabilising blood sugar after weeks of festive eating. Regular meals with protein, healthy fats and fibre help reduce inflammatory stress on the body. She also encourages supporting the liver with hydration, bitter greens and antioxidant-rich foods to help clear the by-products of sugar, alcohol and stress.

Sleep and nervous system support are just as important.

“Stress is just as inflammatory as sugar,” Caroline explains. “The more we calm the nervous system, the more easily the body can heal and produce energy again.”

Gentle movement, magnesium, time outdoors and consistent sleep routines all help lower cortisol, allowing oxygen and nutrients to reach the cells more easily.

How hyperbaric oxygen therapy supports recovery

This is where hyperbaric oxygen therapy (HBOT) becomes incredibly powerful. During an HBOT session, you breathe oxygen in a pressurised chamber. The increased pressure allows oxygen to dissolve directly into the plasma of your blood, meaning it can reach areas that normal breathing simply can’t – especially inflamed, sluggish or poorly nourished tissues.

This flood of oxygen helps calm inflammation, supports tissue repair and most importantly gives your mitochondria the fuel they need to start producing energy again. For many people this feels like a deep, cellular “reset” after weeks of running on empty.

How red light therapy reenergises the cells

Red light therapy works in a completely different but beautifully complimentary way. Specific wavelengths of red and near-infrared light penetrate the skin and are absorbed directly by mitochondria. This stimulates the enzymes involved in ATP production; essentially telling your cells to start generating energy more efficiently again.

At the same time, red light improves circulation and reduces inflammatory signalling, helping oxygen and nutrients flow more freely through the tissues. Many people notice not just more physical energy, but clearer thinking and improved mood too.

As Caroline puts it:

“When inflammation lowers and the cells have oxygen and light, the body remembers how to heal. Energy, clarity and vitality return naturally.”
