You may have noticed it popping up lately.
Hyperbaric oxygen therapy (HBOT) is showing up more and more. From gyms and wellness studios to beauty salons and recovery lounges. It’s quickly becoming one of the most talked-about therapies in the wellness world.
And in many ways, that’s great news. Greater awareness means more people are discovering the powerful role oxygen can play in supporting healing, recovery and overall wellbeing.
But as HBOT grows in popularity, there’s something important we believe everyone should understand before stepping into a chamber:
Not all hyperbaric oxygen therapy is created equal.
At HybO2 House, education has always been a core part of what we do. Our aim isn’t simply to offer hyperbaric oxygen therapy, it’s to provide it safely, responsibly and at a level that delivers meaningful results.
If you’re considering trying HBOT, here are a few important things worth knowing.
What is hyperbaric oxygen therapy?
How It Works
Hyperbaric oxygen therapy works by allowing you to breathe near-pure oxygen inside a pressurised chamber.
Under pressure, the body can dissolve significantly more oxygen into the bloodstream. This oxygen travels deeper into tissues and cells, helping support areas of the body that may be struggling with inflammation, reduced circulation or injury.
What It Can Support
Increased oxygen availability can help support the body’s natural healing processes by:
- Reducing inflammation
- Supporting tissue repair and regeneration
- Improving circulation
- Encouraging faster recovery
- Supporting brain and nervous system function
- Increasing energy and cognitive clarity
It’s a therapy that has been used medically for decades and is now gaining wider recognition for its potential to support a range of health challenges.
More than just a wellness trend
You’ll often see HBOT promoted in the wellness world, and it’s true that many people use it to support energy, recovery, performance and overall wellbeing.
But when hyperbaric oxygen therapy is delivered properly and at the correct therapeutic pressure, it can also be a powerful support tool for people navigating illness, complex health challenges and recovery from medical conditions.
For many of our clients, HBOT becomes f ar more than a wellness treatment, it becomes a lifeline during recovery.
This is where the quality of the chamber, the pressure used and the expertise of the team become incredibly important.
Pressure matters
Understanding Pressure Levels (ATA)
One of the most important, and often overlooked, factors in hyperbaric therapy is the pressure.
Pressure is measured in ATA (Atmospheres Absolute), which refers to the level of pressure inside the chamber compared to normal atmospheric pressure.
At HybO2 House our chambers are capable of operating up to 2 ATA, a pressure level widely researched for supporting healing and recovery.
Very few non-hospital clinics in the UK operate at this level, as it requires specialised equipment, strict safety protocols and experienced technicians.
However, one of the key aspects of our approach is that we don’t believe hyperbaric oxygen therapy should be one-size-fits-all.
Different conditions and health goals can respond better to different pressure protocols. That’s why we are able to tailor pressure levels and treatment plans to suit each individual client, creating a programme that aligns with their needs, health history and recovery goals.
The chamber type matters
Hard Shell vs Soft Shell Chambers
Another difference you may notice when researching HBOT is the type of chamber being used.
Many locations entering the wellness space use soft-shell portable chambers, which as standard, operate at much lower pressures.
At HybO2 House, we use clinical-grade hard shell hyperbaric chambers manufactured from industry standard steel and alloys. They are also subjected to testing for a standard working pressure and over pressure procedure.
These chambers are designed to:
- Safely operate at higher therapeutic pressures
- Provide stronger structural integrity
- Allows maximum oxygen delivery
Simply put, they allow hyperbaric oxygen therapy to be delivered at the level it was originally designed for.
A clinic built on science and experience
Hyperbaric oxygen therapy is one of the most rapidly evolving areas of medical and performance research.
At HybO2 House we work closely with leading scientists and researchers involved in clinical studies around the world, helping contribute to the growing body of evidence surrounding hyperbaric oxygen therapy.
Our technicians also bring real-world expertise from international hyperbaric environments, commercial diving and pressure systems, alongside strong clinical awareness. This depth of experience is incredibly important when working with pressurised environments and ensures every treatment is delivered safely and professionaly.
We continually review emerging research and develop treatment protocols that align with the latest scientific understanding of how oxygen therapy can support different conditions.
Our clinic is also trusted by medical professionals who recommend and refer patients to us, recognising the safety standards, expertise and personalised care we provide.
Supporting a wide range of conditions
For almost six years, HybO2 House has supported hundreds of clients on their health and recovery journeys.
People come to use for many different reasons, from general wellness support to more complex health challenges.
We regularly work with people experiencing:
- Long COVID and post-viral fatigue
- Chronic fatigue and low energy
- Post-stroke recovery
- Sudden hearing loss
- Inflammatory conditions and chronic pain
- Recovery from surgery or injury
- Sports recovery and performance support
- Brain fog and cognitive fatigue
And many more. You can explore the full range of applications we support here.
We also support individuals undergoing or recovering from cancer treatment, helping the body maintain resilience and support tissue healing during an incredibly demanding time.
Every client journey is different, which is why we begin with a full medical questionnaire and consultation to create a programme tailored to each individual.
