Feeling the Effects of the Heatwave? Your Body Might Still Be Recovering

Feeling drained after the UK heatwave?

After days of soaring temperatures, sticky nights and desperately trying to find the cool side of the pillow, many people across the UK are finally breathing a sigh of relief as the heatwave begins to ease.

But while the weather may be cooling down, your body may still be feeling the effects.

The reality is that prolonged periods of excessive heat can place far more stress on the body than most people realise. Add in disrupted sleep, dehydration, alcohol, busy social calendars and long days outdoors and it’s no surprise that so many people are now feeling completely drained.

In fact, many people don’t notice just how exhausted they are until the temperatures finally drop and the adrenaline of “getting through it” wears off.

That lingering fatigue, the headaches, brain fog, irritability, dull skin, poor sleep and generally feeling “off” afterwards? It’s incredibly common after prolonged hot weather. Almost like a post heat-wave hangover.

During periods of extreme head, the body works constantly to regulate temperature. We sweat more, lose fluids faster and deplete essential vitamins and minerals far quicker than normal.

Even mild dehydration can affect energy levels, concentration, recovery, mood and sleep quality, often without us fully recognising dehydration as the cause.

And despite drinking plenty of water, many people still feel depleted afterwards because hydration isn’t always just about fluids alone. Electrolytes, minerals and nutrients also play a huge role in how we recover and function.

This is exactly why therapies focused on hydration and recovery often become far more appealing after periods of excessive heat.

As well as supporting cellular repair, collagen production and skin health, Red Light Therapy provides a moment to switch off.

The same can often be said for hyperbaric oxygen therapy (HBOT). While many people still associate HBOT with athletes or injury recovery, it’s benefits can extend much further into general wellness and recovery support.

By increasing oxygen availability throughout the body in a pressurised environment, HBOT is designed to support the body’s natural recovery processes at a cellular level. Following periods of stress, fatigue, poor sleep or physical depletion, many people incorporate HBOT into their wider recovery and wellness routine to help support energy, clarity and overall wellbeing.

One thing that’s easy to forget after a heatwave is that your body has likely been working overtime for days, sometimes weeks, just to keep up.

So, if you still feel tired, sluggish or not quite yourself even now temperatures are dropping, there’s a good chance your body is still trying to recover.

Sometimes the best thing we can do is stop pushing through exhaustion and actually give the body the support it’s asking for.
