Red Light Therapy: What It Is, How It Works and Why More People Are Giving It A Try

Red light therapy has become one of the fastest-growing wellness treatments in recent years.

Once mainly found in specialist clinics, it’s now being used by everyone from professional athletes and skincare enthusiasts to people looking for support with recovery, aches and pains or simply wanting to invest in their long-term wellbeing.

But as its popularity has grown, so has the confusion.

What is red light therapy? Does it work? And why does the type of equipment being used matter?

Let’s take a closer look.

What Is Red Light Therapy?

Red light therapy, also known as photobiomodulation (PBM), uses specific wavelengths of red and near-infrared light to interact with your body’s cells.

Unlike UV light, which can damage the skin, these wavelengths are carefully selected because they can penetrate beneath the skin’s surface without causing harm.

At a cellular level, the light is absorbed by your cells, encouraging them to product more energy. Scientists believe this increase in cellular energy helps support the body’s natural repair processes, which may explain the wide range of benefits being explored in research today.

It’s a simple concept, but one backed by a growing body of clinical evidence.

What Does the Research Say?

One of the reasons we were excited to introduce red light therapy at HybO2 House is because the research into this continues to grow.

A 2025 consensus statement from the American Academy of Dermatology concluded that photobiomodulation is a safe treatment option for adults, with growing evidence supporting its use across skin health, inflammation and pain management.

Skin health is one of the areas where the research has been particularly encouraging.

A 2023 clinical trial reported a 38% reduction in wrinkles, a 48% increase in dermal density and a 24% improvement in skin firmness after 12 weeks of twice-weekly red light sessions.

Research has also shown promising results for muscle recovery and inflammation, with studies suggesting red light therapy may help reduce muscle soreness, support recovery after exercise and encourage healthy inflammatory responses.

While research is still evolving, the evidence continues to point towards red light therapy being a valuable way to support the body’s natural repair processes.

What Can Red Light Therapy Help Support?

One of the things we love about red light therapy is that no two clients come to us for exactly the same reason.

Some are preparing for a sporting event or recovering from intense training.

Others are focused on healthier-looking skin, while many simply want to support their overall wellbeing as part of a proactive health routine.

People commonly choose red light therapy to increase energy production at a cellular level, but it can also support:

  • Healthier-looking skin and improved skin tone
  • The appearance of fine lines and wrinkles
  • Muscle recovery after exercise
  • Joint comfort and mobility
  • Everyday aches and pains
  • Healthy inflammatory responses
  • General wellbeing and longevity

As with any wellness therapy, individual experiences vary, which is why every journey at HybO2 House starts with a consultation with our expert team and an understanding of what you’re hoping to achieve.

Why We Combine Red Light Therapy with HBOT

Is Red Light Therapy Right for You?

Red light therapy is suitable for a wide range of people, whether you’re looking to support your skin, recover after exercise, increase energy, manage everyday aches and pains or take a more proactive approach to your long-term wellbeing.

It’s completely non-invasive, requires no downtime and most people find it a relaxing and enjoyable experience. Many use it as a time to have a 20-minute power nap!

If you’re unsure where to start, that’s exactly what we’re here for.

Every client begins with a consultation so we can understand your goals, answer your questions and recommend the approach that’s right for you. That might mean red light therapy before your HBOT session, after, or even on its own.

Sessions are available in 10- or 20-minute appointments, with prices starting from just £2 per minute.

If you’re new to red light therapy, ask us about our Signature Experience, where red light and hyperbaric oxygen therapy are combined in a personalised protocol designed around your individual goals.

We’d love to welcome you to HybO2 House and help you discover how red light therapy could become part of your own wellbeing journey.
