HBOT and Sports Recovery: Why More Athletes Are Turning to Oxygen

Whether you’re training for your next event, enjoying regular gym sessions or simply trying to stay active, recovery is just as important as the exercise itself.

Every workout places stress on your muscles. That’s how your body adapts and gets stronger. But it also means your body needs time, nutrients and oxygen to repair the tiny amounts of damage created during exercise.

That’s why recovery has become such a big focus in the world of sport, and why more people are looking at hyperbaric oxygen therapy (HBOT) as part of their recovery routine.

So, what does the research actually say?

How does HBOT Support Recovery?

Hyperbaric oxygen therapy involves breathing near pure oxygen inside a pressurised chamber. At HybO2 House, our chambers operate at up to 2 ATA (atmospheres absolute), double normal atmospheric pressure.

Under normal conditions, most of the oxygen in your body is carried around by your haemoglobin, part of your red blood cells. During HBOT, the increased pressure allows oxygen to be transported in more than one way. As well as being carried by your haemoglobin, oxygen is also carried within your blood plasma, increasing the amount to your body’s tissues.

This means more oxygen can be delivered throughout the body, helping to support the natural processes involved in repair, recovery and healthy inflammatory responses.

What Does the Research Say?

The research around HBOT and sports recovery is still developing, but the findings so far are encouraging.

A 2025 systemic review and meta-analysis, analysing ten studies involving almost 300 participants, found that hyperbaric oxygen therapy significantly improved recovery following exercise-induced muscle injury, compared with those who didn’t receive treatment.

Another randomised controlled trial involving elite youth footballers found that just one HBOT session after a match supported measurable improvements in post-match recovery.

Researchers also believe they understand why.

Studies suggest that hyperbaric oxygen therapy may help reduce inflammation, improve oxygen delivery to recovering tissues and activate the body’s own muscle repair mechanisms following exercise-induced injury.

Like many areas of science, research continues to evolve. Some studies looking specifically at delayed onset muscle soreness (DOMS) have shown more mixed results, but the strongest evidence continues to support HBOT’s role in the tissue repair and recovery following exercise-induced muscle damage.

Why This Matters Beyond Elite Sport

Hampshire cricketer James Fuller came to us after rupturing his hamstring with one goal: to get back ahead of the injury curve.
After just four sessions he told us:

"The pain is pretty much gone."

Alongside them, we regularly welcome professional footballers and athletes who use HBOT to support recovery between training, optimise performance and prepare for competition. We also work with clients who choose to install hyperbaric chambers in their own homes, making recovery part of their every day routine.

Could HBOT Help You Recover Better?

The benefits of good recovery aren’t just for professional athletes.

Whether you’re training for your first 10K, spending more time in the gym, or simply wanting to stay active without feeling sore for days afterwards, your body relies on the same recovery processes.

Hyperbaric oxygen therapy isn’t a shortcut or magic fix, but the growing body of research suggests it may be a valuable addition to a well-rounded recovery plan.

If you’re curious about whether HBOT could support your recovery, every journey at HybO2 House starts with a consultation. We’ll take the time to understand your goals, your lifestyle and whether hyperbaric oxygen therapy is right for you.

If you’re new to HBOT, our Signature Experience combines a consultation, 10 minutes of red light therapy and 45 minutes of hyperbaric oxygen therapy, making it the perfect introduction for new clients.
