If you’ve spent any time looking into wellness, recovery or longevity recently, you’ve probably come across Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy (HBOT).
It’s one of those treatments that seems to be everywhere right now. Athletes use it to recover faster. People living with chronic fatigue are turning to it for support. Biohackers are fascinated by its potential for healthy ageing. Even celebrities are getting on board.
But despite all the buzz, one question keeps coming up…
What actually is Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy, and does it really work?
Let’s cut through the jargon and explain exactly what it is, how it works, and why so many people are turning to it.
What Is Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy?
Put simply, Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy involves breathing near pure oxygen inside a specially designed pressurised chamber.
At HybO2 House, our chambers operate at up to 2 ATA (atmospheres absolute), around double normal atmospheric pressure.
Now, the pressure is where the magic happens.
Normally, oxygen is carried around your body almost entirely by your red blood cells. But inside a hyperbaric chamber, that increased pressure allows oxygen to dissolve directly into your blood plasma as well. This means it can travel further, penetrate deeper into tissues and reach areas that may not usually receive an optimal oxygen supply.
The result? A significant increase in the amount of oxygen available throughout your body.
And that’s important because oxygen plays a role in almost everything your body does. From repairing damaged tissue and reducing inflammation, to producing energy and supporting healthy brain function.
What Happens Inside the Body During HBOT?
Think of oxygen as your body’s repair team.
Every day your body is working behind the scenes to repair, regenerate and recover. Whether you’re healing after an injury, bouncing back from illness, training for an event or simply managing the stresses of everyday life, those repair processes all rely on one essential ingredient: oxygen.
When more oxygen reaches your tissues, your body is better equipped to do what it was designed to do.
Research shows Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy can help support:
- The formation of new blood vessels
- Collagen production
- Fibroblast activity (the cells responsible for repairing tissue)
- Your body’s natural defence against infection
- Healthy inflammatory responses
- Tissue repair and recovery
A 2025 review of HBOT research also highlighted its influence on the cellular signalling pathways involved in inflammation and healing, helping explain why so many people report feeling better supported during recovery.
Another study looking at chronic wound healing found HBOT reduced markers of oxidative stress and inflammation, while increasing growth factors associated with healing.
That’s one of the reasons HBOT has such broad appeal.
Whether you’re recovering from surgery, injury, burnout or simply the wear and tear of modern life, giving your body greater access to oxygen means giving it more of what it needs to recover efficiently.
The Longevity Research That’s Got Everyone Talking
One of the biggest reasons HBOT has exploded in popularity over recent years is the growing research around healthy ageing.
Scientists are no longer just asking whether HBOT helps people recover from illness or injury.
They’re asking whether it could influence how we age at a cellular level.
One landmark study from Tel Aviv University and the Sagol Center for Hyperbaric Medicine looked at two of the most recognised markers of biological ageing:
Telomeres – protective caps on the ends of our chromosomes that naturally shorten as we age.
And senescent cells – often nicknamed “zombie cells” because they’ve stopped functioning properly but refuse to die, creating inflammation and preventing healthy new cells from thriving.
After completing a structured course of Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy, participants experienced:
- Up to a 38% increase in telomere length in certain immune cells.
- Up to a 37% reduction in senescent (zombie) cells.
It was the first study to demonstrate these kinds of cellular changes in humans following HBOT.
While no treatment can stop the ageing process altogether, it’s easy to see why this research has generated so much excitement. Rather than simply supporting recovery today, HBOT may also be helping create healthier conditions for your body tomorrow.
Can HBOT Help Brain Function?
Another area attracting significant attention is brain health.
We’ve all experienced brain fog at some point. Struggling to concentrate, forgetting simple things or feeling mentally drained can have a huge impact on daily life.
Emerging research suggests HBOT may help.
Multiple clinical studies, including randomised, sham-controlled trials, have explored Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy’s effects on cognitive performance, cerebral blood flow and brain metabolism.
Researchers believe the increased oxygen delivery to brain tissue, alongside stimulation of neuroplasticity, your brain’s ability to adapt, repair and create new connections, may help support memory, focus and overall cognitive performance.
While research continues to evolve, many of our clients describe feeling:
- Sharper mentally
- Better able to focus
- Less affected by brain fog
- More energised throughout the day
As always, every individual is different, but it’s another exciting area where the science continues to grow.

What Happens During a Session?
If you’ve never experienced HBOT before, you might imagine it feels a little intimidating.
In reality, most people are surprised by just how relaxing it is.
After your consultation, you’ll settle into the chamber while the pressure gradually increases. The only sensation most people notice is a slight change in ear pressure – similar to what you might feel when an aeroplane begins to descend.
Once you’re comfortable, all you have to do is relax.
Some clients read. Others listen to music or simply enjoy switching off while their body gets to work.
For many people, it’s one of the few opportunities in the week to completely disconnect.
